Now is the time to register for winter term. Look at the schedule online. If you need help, see Carolinda Williams, 954-201-8111, cwilliam@broward.edu, our technical adviser for assistance. If you plan to graduate before next year winter term, you must take the internship and the project management classes. DIG2940 Digital Media Practicum and DIG2945 Digital Media Project Management are offered only once a year.

If you need that class, register for it.

Students needed for commercial of BC Digital Media Technology

Anyone who is available to be in a commercial that is being shot today,  August 24, 1 p.m., please come to Bldg. 70, R. 225, South Campus. Broward College is shooting a commercial that will highlight South Campus, and specific programs offered here. If you are on campus, stop by. You may be on your way to being a commercial talent. This is a volunteer job, but you can gain bonus points for your discussion grade. I am not sure how long it will take, but certainly not too long. We are scheduled for 1-3 p.m., but I think it will be less than a half hour of shooting time.
As Digital Media Technology followers, what interests you?

What would you like to see in this blog that might help you return. Are you more interested in graphic design in Illustrator, Photoshop, or InDesign, or web design, or video production. Comment here to add your voice on topics you might like to have discussed. I will start with what comes to my attention, but I am always interested in your voice. Any suggestions for future postings?
Welcome to Term 20121, the fall term at Broward College, Digital Media/Multimedia Technology, South Campus.

As you can tell, it has been a while since I have posted to the blog. This summer my mother broke her hip and I have really devoted my time to taking care of her. I am very lucky to still have my mom who is 79 and I will do anything to help take care of her. I am still living with her until she completes all the therapy to walk by herself. Although I had online classes this summer, I didn't keep up with the blog as my workload became very complicated with the health care. I am only going into details here to let everyone know why I have not been consistent in updating the blog.

Now that the term has started, I hope to post on a regular basis so that this blog will be pertinent to you.

As we are coming close to the end of the term (7 school days left), but who's counting, I thought this might give you all a good feeling. I found this animation through http://blog.jemillo.com/2010/05/return-of-blog-well-nearly.html the blog of Jem Robinson. When you have some time, you might want to look at some of her work. But the animation is the star today. Rhiannon Evans that I stumbled across recently, created this work:

If it is Tuesday, it must mean I have something more to say! Luis Giron (digital media major), who works in sound, After Effects, Flash, among other things at Sapient Nitro, just shared a link with me that I will share with you. What a profound statement this makes. I think that some of it says what I have said in different words. Maybe this will be the first time that you will hear someone say "You should steal." Read the article, read the comments, say what you will here in response.

Photoshop to the fix again! A beautiful photo, yes, but more important notice the attention called to the beautiful Jane Aldridge (in front) from her blog: http://seaofshoes.typepad.com/sea_of_shoes/. You could use this technique in video as well. Thanks to Lisette of http://lemodablog.blogspot.com/, who always has great fashion links. Not bad when you can look at gorgeous women and learn about graphics at the same time.
And take a look at her blog, maybe a long look: in an interview 12/1009, Jane is quoted, "With 75,000 daily hits, my blog has become a full-time job. I dedicate 5 to 6 hours a day to Sea of Shoes. I have to take the pictures, edit them, write the accompanying post and reply to between [sic] many emails and answer many interviews. I created it with mum two years ago. It started off as both of our projects, but I ended up taking over it completely. My mom has her own blog now." If you don't believe me about the importance of blogging and the possibilities of real jobs, this should about do it.

One more that I think would be helpful for logo design is http://vector.tutsplus.com/tutorials/tools-tips/quick-tip-how-to-create-a-paper-style-alphabet-using-illustrator-3d/. This tutorial was created by the same author of the previous post, Iaroslav Lazunov

I don't think that you need to create your own alphabet, but the article will give you tips on 3D modeling, symbols, and blends in Illustrator.

For those of you already working with CSS and web design, you might enjoy http://www.noupe.com/tutorial/drop-down-menu-jquery-css.html. Even if you don't know jquery, I think you can apply these concepts to your web design.

He seems to be very talented and very experienced in creating useful tutorials. I hope you can learn something from these.
In this ongoing view of the Illustrator tutorial, I am recommending http://vector.tutsplus.com/tutorials/illustration/how-to-create-a-tube-of-paint-and-a-brush-using-adobe-illustrator/. If you learn these skills, you will turn flat graphics into ones that show depth, perspective. Also, when is the last time you have used penumbras in designing illustrations? If you do this tutorial, I bet you will soon become a better designer, because your eyes will be trained to look at light, shadows, blends, and so on. Let me know what you think? How many of you already think of these techniques when creating illustrations?
This article on improving your Illustrator skills caught my attention this morning. Try this link and respond with the link to the one you liked the best. http://www.noupe.com/tutorial/improve-your-illustrator-skills.html. I have always like Noupe design. What do you think?
This morning brings an article about whether a big (Ad Agency) or small agency is better to work for in terms of mentorship. Here is the link: http://adage.com/article/small-agency-diary/starting-a-small-agency-career/226921/. Read the article and the comments to learn what those involved in both sides have to say. Would you agree? Which one has been most effective in your experience.

Am I the only one that can see these errors (typos)?

In my research for pertinent information, articles for classes, I have found two errors that blow my mind.  The first is in typography and the second is a contest winner with a typo. Think about the ramifications of these errors. Did you see the error as soon as you viewed the image?

http://www.brimmingwith.com/work_illu.php#  (the fifth image in illustrations "happy father's day) or see it on Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/brimming/4474773740/#/

Tell me the error.

The Olympics logo I talked about in Illustrator class this morning, so all of you in Illustrator class don't chime in until after someone else identifies the error.

What is Feedburner? or googlefeedburner to be exact?

First you must establish an account with Google Reader if you don't already have one. Then go to Google and read about feedburner. YouTube has many videos on feedburner. Links to ones you might want to watch are available in Blackboard.

Once you watch these, you need to create a Google reader/feedburner link to your blog so that users can subscribe to your site.

Need job experience? Here is your chance.

Our company is looking for somebody who is able to record a seminar on audio to then be broadcast on the web. We thought about hiring a student, to give him/her the opportunity of doing the job.

The final product we need is an audio in MP3. We will be broadcasting a conference via the web using a service call Webex provided by Intercall.

The audio needs to be recorded using a digital recorder. We will have the speaker; we need the technical help with the recording equipment and the technical person that can use it.

Intercall wants us to provide them with an MP3 of the conference. They told me, we need to record in wave format and have it compressed to MP3. In addition we will need to give them a script with the times for each slide.
For example: Slide one 00.00 to 01.03 (one minute 3 seconds). The conference will be a total of 45 to 50 minutes.

Intercall will need the voice to go with a power point presentation (our speaker will prepare the power point presentation) that will be presented via web. Intercall will put together the presentation in PowerPoint and the voice.

The talk could be recorded here at our office or we could go over to the place you think is best for the student.  The first recording will take place either the last week of February or the first week of March.

If you are interested, please respond and I will send you the specific company information.

Leveraging the Web to land a job

If you didn't believe me about the possibilities with blogging or didn't go home after class and read the Sun-Sentinel article in the Money section, page 6D, then here is the short copy:

MTV just had an online contest for its first Twitter jockey, for a job for a year, plus $100K prize. Murphy-Goode Winery received 2,000 applicants for its "Wine Country Lifestyle Correspondent," a $10,000 a MONTH social-media job meant to promote the business and Northern California. Jeanette Thwing, a 27-year-old Orlando woman who blogs about affordable fashion, learned about Sunglass Hut's blogger contest from one of her 5,000 Facebook fans. The winnings included $100K, a furnished apt. in New York City for a year, $1,000 fashion allowance, and a blogging job for a year.

Now who wants to learn how to blog and use Social Media? Anyone who responds by next Wednesday, January 26 with a story about other similar contests or jobs or links to the winners' blogs with insightful information, will receive 5 bonus pts.
