Faculty Introduction

Faculty Introduction
My bachelor's and master's degrees are in Business Education. I have been teaching at Broward College for 35 years. I began working with PCs when they were first developed, in 1981 (and I am still learning). After finding out what computers could do, I helped develop many of the computer application courses at the college. In addition, I developed and revised the Digital Media/Multimedia Technology A.A.S. degree (from an AS to an AAS and now back to an A)S, as well as the Advanced Technical Certificate in Multimedia Web Development and two Technical Certficates. After having extensive training in computer applications, what I do know about learning and computers is that you will be continually learning. What you know today will change almost by tonight. It is an exciting, interesting, and creative field. With this course, you are on your way to becoming a web developer. There is much to learn, so be ready to enjoy and work toward your goals.

Course Description

The student will learn the basics of creating a web site and will progress through the processes of analysis, design, development and implementation of complete web sites using HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) with text editors and WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) web editors. This course includes: Introduction to the WWW, Web Programming with XHTML, layout and structure of web sites, CCS, page layout with CSS, forms, multimedia and interactivity, web promotion and brief intro to Javascript & Ecommerce. Websites will be created using XHTML and CSS. You are probably asking yourself why learn how to create web pages with XHTML instead of using other web editors. In order to use the editors you will need to know the code to correct your errors. Many employers test potential employees on the code. Taking this course will enable you to know how to create web pages with code and apply this knowledge to any editor.

Methods of Instruction

"This is a 3-credit hour fully online course. Normally, a 3-credit hour on-campus course would meet once each week (during a 16 week term) for a total of 3 hours per week or 48 hours per term. In this class, we will meet only online, and you will engage in structured out-of-class or online activities. These online activities will include graded assignments, graded projects, and graded online quizzes.

Because browsers show code in different ways, it will be important for you to view your files in both. You can also check your code in AOL if that is your browser. The browsers will be discussed. You will be using XHTML tags to create your web sites. You will need an editor which does not place unnecessary codes in the files. You will use Notepad on the PC platform; Apple users will use TextEdit. You will need to submit the files as zipped (archived) files which you will learn how to do, in the course, if you are not familiar with zipping files.
